Learning from League of Legends

A preliminary study on the application of Connected Learning Principles

This study examines the details, advantages, and challenges of implementing an after-hours program for middle and high school students structured around League of Legends and based on the principles of Connected Learning. Research studies from the Digital Media and Learning Hub, testimonials from members of the League of Legends community, and conversations with education initiatives and organizations supporting similar programs have been incorporated into the discussion. Key elements of connected learning including efficacy of interest-based learning, benefits of peer and community support, and appreciation for academic principles are then examined in the context of League of Legends culture. Finally, recommendations are provided for creating optimal systems designed for flexibility and implementation at key pilot locations to gauge support and serve as an example to propose a broader, more inclusive program.
